Merck Pays Out Billions For Vioxx

03/05/2008 - A nearly five billion dollar settlement over the withdrawn painkiller Vioxx is on the track to move out to thousands of affected consumers.

Drug company, Merck says more then 44,000 people have signed up to take part in the deal by submitting medical records and other documents.

Merck said it would withdrawal from the agreement unless 85 percent of the plaintiffs joined in,  once all the submissions are verified, that number should reach 93 percent.

Merck pulled Vioxx off the market in 2004 after it's own studies showed the painkiller doubled the risk of heart attack when taken for 18 months.
